Does God Need Man?

I recently attended a children’s program that opened with a recitation. The words came hurriedly with a catchy rhythm. I’m not against creativity in written rhythm and prose, but this account of creation expressed God’s thoughts and needs. The theme implied that God needed humans to complete Himself, as if something was missing until the thought of creating man occurred. This alarmed me. Was this aligned with the truth of the Scriptures?

Genesis chapter one is the written account of creation. God is the creator of heaven and earth. He spoke, all things existed, and all things were good. When God said Let there be, there was. We are not given God’s reasoning or thoughts before or during His creative act. To quote Genesis 1:26a: God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: Said, God created and blessed man. No further explanation is required.

God gave the first man and woman all they needed to eat and thrive in His perfect garden and His presence. He instructed them to avoid the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Eve was deceived, and Adam disobeyed eating the forbidden fruit. Their nakedness was revealed, and they experienced sins and consequences. But God covered them.

Throughout the Bible, God interacts with people through covenants. He instituted the New Covenant two thousand years ago by sending His only Begotten Son, Jesus, to shed his blood to cover our sins. We live in the grace age under the new and better covenant that promises salvation to all who believe. God gave His best to save us from the bondage of sin and eternal damnation. Through belief in Jesus, we have eternal life in heaven, and we are never to be punished for our sins. We deserve Hell, but God’s mercy and grace made a way for us to escape.

Nowhere in the Bible can I find that God needs a man. He’s all-knowing, all-mighty, and all-powerful without us. Sinful man cannot make God more complete. God doesn’t need us; we need Him.

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, breath, and everything.

And hath made of one blood all nation of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

That they should seek the Lord if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Acts 17:24-28
