Forbid Them Not

(Noah’s behavior is not due to neglect or lack of love!)

I recently watched The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! This movie perfectly captures the tone and premise of the original book written by Barbara Robinson in 1972 and the play written after that. We produced this play at Pine Haven Baptist Church twenty-five years ago, so we enjoyed reminiscing about who played each part and the fun times. I still smile when I think about Sharon Anderson’s paper mâché chicken used at the Bradley family’s dinner table.

This movie sheds light on the unsavory attitudes that can be displayed in the church toward dirty, misbehaved children. The Herdmans were dreaded and shunned by many church folks due to rude behaviors such as cussing, stealing, smoking, etc.  So, when they showed up to be at the Emmanuel Church’s seventy-fifth Christmas Pageant, the church did not extend a friendly welcome.

Mrs. Armstong, who typically directs the play, broke both her legs, so Mrs. Grace Bradley volunteers to direct the pageant. Facing criticism from other church ladies, Grace keeps the Herdman cast without knowing the outcome.

The Herdman’s original intent for attending church was to devour treats, but they received something sweeter. Because Grace extended her namesake, her family, the congregation, and the community saw the Herdman’s behavior as outward signs of neglect and lack of love.

Like the Pias church ladies, the disciples tried to send away children. Jesus had something to say about this.

But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for such is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:14

Oh what fond memories. When I taught first grade, this book was one I always read to my classes in December. They loved it and learned important lessons at the same time.

Have you seen the new movie? I’m kinda curious about it, but I don’t think the original can be topped.

Merry Christmas to you and your family, Lisa.
