Human creation is a remarkable display of Almighty God’s handiwork. God possesses each human’s inward most parts and covers us in our mother’s womb. We are curiously made in secret and are fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are God’s works, so let’s praise Him! God’s design for humanity is beyond our comprehension, but it deserves our respect for all babies in the womb.
A mother’s womb is designed to sustain the life of the unborn. Momma is ready to support her baby by supplying nourishment from her blood. Oxygen and carbon dioxide flow through her blood to the placenta. Life-sustaining blood goes to the baby’s heart and flows through its body.
At 3.5 weeks, the fetus’s heart has formed, and the brain and spinal cord begin developing. The tiny human also starts forming its gastrointestinal tract.
At 6 weeks gestation, the embryo has a steady heartbeat around 110 beats per minute. The developing embryo continues to grow as the heart moves oxygen-carrying blood. Mom’s blood is required to sustain life and growth.
Brain cells rapidly increase 15 to 20 weeks after conception, and the baby emits their brain waves by the seventh month. Research shows babies can feel the mother’s touch at about 21 weeks. The baby sucks their thumb, hiccups, and responds to external stimuli such as music, loud sounds, or the mother’s voice from 25 to 28 weeks. The lungs are formed, and the eyelids can open and close. From 29 to 32 weeks, the fetus can stretch, kick, and make grasping motions, their eyes can be sensitive to light, bone marrow is forming, and they may have hair!
Bones harden, fingernails grow, and limbs fill out, and the baby may head toward the birthing canal from 33 to 36 weeks. Lots of fat is added so the baby will stay warm after birth and muscles are entirely developed. The lungs, brain, and nervous system are also fully developed. At 38 to 40 weeks, the baby is ready, and the miracle of birth occurs.
As a woman, motherhood is my most outstanding achievement in life. I married young, had my first child at twenty, and had two babies within the next eight years. We struggled financially, spiritually, and emotionally as we raised our children, but they were worth every challenge. Along the way, we also experienced joy-filled days and tremendous love. As I’ve watched my daughter deliver two babies and adopt her third, I’m astounded at God’s design of humanity. Watching my babies and my rapidly growing grandchildren grow to adulthood is delightful.
The miracle of life, from conception to rapid growth and development in the womb, displays God’s design for humans. Raising children and watching our offspring nurture our grandchildren fulfills God’s instruction to multiply. God’s creative plan for life is fascinating and fruitful.
Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Psalm 127:3
