Wear Your Harvest Hat!

The straw hat has an interesting history. These hats became popular in the Middle Ages and were worn by the working class to protect them from the sun. By the late 1800s and early 1900s straw hats were worn by many. They became a desired fixture when President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Panama Canal construction site in 1906. The President photographed while donning his straw hat made this sun-shielding accessory skyrocket to fame.

We might spot a straw hat on our scarecrows who work to scare away unwanted birds seeking to eat our crops. Or perhaps we may find one hanging on a post or used for porch décor. We are likely to spot this staple fall décor on display but their intended use is to be worn by the working class.

Paul, a willing worker for our Lord, traded his high hat for a humble hat of servanthood. He forsook his lofty education and Sanhedrin ways to serve among people of low estate. Shipwrecked, beaten, and imprisoned Paul witnessed and taught of the saving grace of Jesus Christ. His work for the Lord brought some to Christ and prompted others to angry actions of persecution. Nonetheless, Paul is known for his labor of love. The New Testament is filled with Biblical instruction for believers seeking to serve.

Perhaps God has called you to work in His kingdom. Time is running out and there are many souls to win. The lost live among us: in our communities, on our job sites, in our churches, in our jails, and in our homes. Winning souls requires the willingness to pray, witness, and persevere. I pray to be a more willing worker, especially during this fall season. Let’s wear our harvest hat with a willing mind to witness!

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

Pray ye therefore the lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Matthew 9: 36-38

    Wonderful! I’ll never look at a straw hat in quite the same way again. I wear one at the beach as a sun shield.

    Thank you.
