When I Was a Child

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. I Corinthians 13:11

Speak

My oldest granddaughter often bosses her little sister around. She will say things like, “Jo don’t you want my toy? It is better than yours, let’s trade.” Anna simply wants what Jo has, so she uses words to get her way. We expect this from Preschoolers but the sad thing is many of us continue these behaviors in adulthood. Paul wrote in  Ephesians 4:29: Let no corrupt communication proceed out your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace into the hearers. Selfish and manipulative words are inappropriate for adult Christian women. Ladies, let’s speak to build others up and show God’s grace. Should both bitter and sweet words (James 3:11) flow from mature women’s lips?

Understand

My 9-year-old niece was spending the night at my house with my granddaughters’ ages 5 and 3. They all created artwork and it was easy to tell who drew each picture. The understanding of detail and the ability level were apparent. As new believers, we have a limited understanding of God’s Word but through study, we gain knowledge. Paul writes in II Timothy chapter 2: Study to show thyself approved into God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Obedience to this passage will bring an understanding of God’s precepts, help us avoid false ways, and make us wise (Psalm 119:104; Proverbs 1:2). As we gain Biblical understanding, it will be more evident to others that God’s creative work is portrayed through us as we grow and mature.

Think

My granddaughter Anna will sometimes do unsafe, irrational things like carry her baby brother up the steps or push her sister. She doesn’t think about the consequences; her imagination drives her to the action! We women on the other hand must learn to grab our thoughts, cast down our imaginations, and bring them under the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). Thoughts of abandonment, insecurities, jealousy, and defeat will hinder our Christian walk. We must learn to think about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report (Philippians 4:8). If there is to be any virtue or praise, we must think about these things. We as Christian women can learn to think correctly in order to live productive lives for Jesus.

Put Away

Toys often clutter my house. This hinders me from being productive in the home, so I must put them away. Sin will hinder our productivity for Christ. We are to put off concerning the former conversation the old man (or woman), which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (Eph. 4:22). Adult Godly women will stop drinking, partying, flirting, fornicating, or indulging in any sinful behaviors that are restricted in God’s Word. We will then put on the new man (or woman), which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness (Eph. 4:24). Ladies, let’s be grown-ups and put away childish things!

WORDS OF TRUTH

The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the Word of God be not blasphemed.

TITUS 2:3-5
