Prison Potential

Our friend Creature was full of potential but his early years found him captive to an unsavory lifestyle. Illicit activity landed him in prison.

We met Anthony Mangrum, also known as Creature, in the early ’90s. He exhibited his self-taught skills as he led the crew in building our church addition. Hours of study in carpentry books and applying what he learned on various job sites showcased his ability.

When Anthony was released from prison he made our town his home. My husband and I developed a lasting friendship as we welcomed him. Others in our community did the same. He worked for two local businesses and was a reliable employee. I’m sure I can speak on behalf of his co-workers and former employers to validate that each loved and valued his friendship. Anthony was a warm, caring, and faithful individual.

Anthony was instrumental in our daughter Courtney’s wedding as he built her alter for prayer and her swing for pictures. He hung his own vintage doors for her ceremonial entrance. We still own many handcrafted items in our home made by Anthony. He also helped build our bonus room which we enjoy immensely. Not only did Anthony lend a hand to help us but others as well.

My friend Beth wanted a life size elephant constructed for VBS for a photo prop and Anthony delivered! A few years later my firend Crysti needed a bridge built for VBS and again Anthony completed the project. No matter how extreme the request he was willing to oblige.

Anthony picked up trash at our local Christian radio station for years, helped others complete home projects, and pitched in to help local express market owners at their place of business. Anthony fostered friendships and was dedicated to those he loved.

Anthony left this life with friends by his side. He did not live or die alone because he exercised his potential to be a blessing and we valued him. Anthony and I often talked of his soul’s condition and he assured me had surrendered to Jesus as Savior. This is the biggest blessing of all.

Many residents of my county have been incarcerated and are living below their potential. Drugs and illegal behavior have taken them down a wrong path and landed them behind bars. They may have missed their potential but God hasn’t, have you?

Let brotherly love continue. Hebrew 13:1

What a sweet story of redemption. I’m so happy Anthony found acceptance in your community and redemption through God’s grace.

    Thanks for sharing his story.

God desires to redeem. He used our community to actively invest in Anthony and point him toward redemption in Jesus. We were blessed as well. Thanks for reading and commenting.

I’m so thankful our church family showed a Godly love to these inmates as they worked on building a beautiful Sanctuary.
Some stated they didn’t know there were people who still cared. In return our church was blessed by several returning to our church services after being released. It’s never too late to make a U-Turn and come to know Jesus. Some just needs to be shown the real love Jesus has for them.
